Quick summary
There’s been a lot of buzz in the world of weight loss medications recently and we’re here to break it down for you. If you’ve already heard whispers about a new, higher strength of Wegovy, we’re bringing you all the facts, all in one place.
Novo Nordisk is preparing to launch a higher 7.2mg dose of Wegovy in the coming months, and the UK will be the very first place to get it. As always, Habitual is committed to keeping our community informed, safe, and empowered with the most up-to-date information so you can make the right choices for your journey.
What is Wegovy 7.2mg?
Wegovy 7.2mg is the newest, highest dose developed by Novo Nordisk. It contains the same active ingredient and works exactly the same as the current Wegovy doses: regulating appetite, slowing digestion, and improving blood sugar control. You’ll take it using the same pre-filled injection pen, following the same weekly dosing routine as before.
So what is the difference? The higher dose is designed to support even greater weight loss.
The STEP UP Clinical Trial and the Key Takeaways
The STEP UP trial was one of the biggest Wegovy studies to date. It followed 1,407 adults with a BMI over 30 for 72 weeks.[1]
The results were striking: those on the new 7.2mg dose lost over 20% of their body weight on average, compared with 15–17% on the standard 2.4mg dose. Additionally, the chances of achieving more than 25% weight loss were 2.4 times higher on 7.2mg compared to 2.4mg. Side effects remained largely similar, with most people adjusting well to the increase.
Overall, the trial shows that the higher dose can deliver better weight loss results while keeping side effects manageable for most people.
What Does This Mean for Your Weight Loss Journey?
If you’re already happy with your results, not much changes. But if you’ve hit a plateau or considered switching to Mounjaro for higher doses, this new option could be a game-changer.
If you are currently on Wegovy 2.4mg you will soon be able to increase your Wegovy dose and achieve a higher percentage of weight loss without switching medications. This new higher dose means more choice so your treatment plan can feel personalised, safe, and aligned with your long-term success.

What Are the Side Effects and How Can You Manage Them?
The 7.2mg dose comes with the same side effects you might experience on lower doses of Wegovy or Mounjaro. The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal, due to the way GLP-1 medications slow transit through the stomach and help you feel fuller quicker. These side effects are usually mild, and tend to settle within a few days to a couple of weeks. In the trial more people experienced altered skin sensations (dysesthesia) than with the lower doses, but they were mostly mild and resolved during the course of their treatment.
Side effects of GLP-1 medications are often more noticeable when starting treatment or increasing your dose, but there are helpful strategies to reduce the chance of them occurring.
